When Alien is in the details - "MAII CHOOTSANA"

**Interview on 20/05/22

Hello, can you please introduce yourself?

Hi, my name is Maii.

I’ve been working in illustration for quite some time and run a company called COLLAB, which specializes in advertising, mainly focused on illustration work.

From your work in the field of advertising and illustration, how did you become interested in NFTs?

It probably started around the first wave of COVID. Everything was going downhill, including my career and mental state.

I wanted to find a secondary income, and during that time, NFTs were starting to boom. A few people encouraged me to give it a try, so I decided to jump in.

Your work on Foundation is really intriguing. Let’s start with “CELESTIAL OF SPHERE.” Could you talk us through the idea and the process behind it?

Actually, this piece began as something I wanted to give back to my clients.

I sketched a lot of different elements, inspired by the idea of blending astronomy and belief systems. This led to a depiction of various constellations, which are present in both sciences.

I used Greek and Roman art to represent mythology and combined it with elements of technology and aliens.

I drew all the elements on the computer and then composed them into a circle with no clear top or bottom, so you can view it from any angle.

Once the piece was finished and ready to be uploaded to Foundation,

I wanted to take it one step further, so I animated it, which is what you see now.

Why did you choose this method for your work?

I usually work with a wide variety of techniques and media, but nowadays, most of the process is digital because it’s more convenient for commercial work. It’s easier to make adjustments, and I’ve gotten used to this method.

You also have a collection called “Deep Dimension,” which seems to have a different style. Could you tell us about that?

As I mentioned before, I work in many different styles, and I tend to get bored easily. But one thing that’s always been present in my work is the alien theme, along with various animals.

For this collection, I also created Figure Toys, and I wanted to design artwork to accompany them.

The resulting images are meant to create a mood that contrasts with the alien figures, which I thought would be fun. In the end, it turned into a war in the middle of a flower garden! (laughs)

It seems like most of your work revolves around space and aliens. Is that a personal interest of yours?

Yes, I love aliens, but not in a futuristic way. It’s more like vintage sci-fi. If it were a movie, it would probably be something like DUNE.

Do you approach your 1:1 work differently from when you work on a collection?

When working on a collection, there needs to be a theme or some kind of storyline that ties everything together.

But to be honest, I can probably only push myself to finish about three pieces before I get bored! (laughs)

Lastly, do you think there’s a difference between creating NFTs and your usual work?

I think the creative process is pretty much the same, but the difference lies in the selling part.

The work I usually do is more like a service—I’m not really an artist in the traditional sense, as I’m always working behind the scenes.

Selling NFTs requires credibility, both in the value of the work and in maintaining a certain level of consistency. That’s why a strong community is essential.

I understand the concept, but building a community in the NFT space is quite difficult for me, which is why my work isn’t really selling as it should. (laughs)

Before we wrap up, can you promote yourself a bit?

For NFTs, you can find my work on Foundation.

I’m also on Instagram, where I post personal drawings and updates from my company COLLAB, as well as figure models under the name VECTOR FIGURE.

Thanks you so much, Maii !

Thank you, and please stay tuned for more!
